Salman makes winning start in Zain tennis event [Gulf Daily News (Bahrain)]


(Gulf Daily News (Bahrain) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) SALMAN Abbas made it to the under-12 boys singles second round in the Ninth Zain Junior Open Tennis Championship, which got underway yesterday.

The Bahraini youngster defeated Mubarak Yousef 6-4, 6-2 in one of the most exciting games of the day at the Bahrain Tennis Club (BTC) courts in Juffair.

In the same age category, Yousef Ashraf followed suit beating Wassim Majzoub 6-1, 6-0, while Aniketh Das Roy, Rico M Lachama and David Mast received walkovers from Mahmood Jassim, Isa Al Gattan and Ahmed Al Tareef, respectively.

Nineteen matches took place yesterday on the first day of this two-week event, being organised by the club for the ninth successive time and is sponsored by Bahrain's telecommunications company Zain.

The tournament's inaugural day featured nine matches in the under-eight open section, held at the club's new mini-tennis court.

Selim Sherif's match against Andrew Monkhouse was the most interesting, with the former recording a 4-2 victory to book a berth in the quarter-finals.

Also in the same age category, Akshat Gupta edged Eleina Alex 4-2, while Mary Monkhouse received a walkover from Advaith Shankar.

Tareq Amin, Josh Booth, Zaid Hyseini, Tamim Majzoub and Abdulla Buhasan all posted respective 4-1 wins over Jamsheed C U, Alex Chandakar, Khrismi Verona, Rushil Kaul and Fahad Ahmed to seal their places in the competition's last eight.



There were three other matches in the under-10, which is also open for boys and girls. Two of these games were walkovers for Hassan Al Ghattan and Maria Talib against Shannon Mariani and Ahmed Mohammed, while Avinash Ram picked up a comfortable 10-0 victory against Bhavya Sabbineni.

Tournament action continues today with 12 matches, including eight in the under-10 second round and four in the under-eight quarter-finals.


Yesterday's opening ceremony was held under the patronage of Zain general manager Mohammed Zainalabedin, in the presence of club president Khamis Al Muqla and other club members.

More than 100 juniors are lined up for this year's tournament, featuring a total of eight different age categories.

They include the under-12 boys singles, under-14 boys singles, under-16 boys singles and under-18 boys singles.

An under-16 and under-18 girls singles events are also set for this year's event, to be organised for the ninth successive time.
