Rumsfeld, Rice visit Iraq for talks with Iraqi leaders: report+

(Japan Economic Newswire Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)CAIRO, April 26_(Kyodo) _ U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice made unexpected visits to Iraq on Wednesday, the Associated Press reported.

Rumsfeld arrived unannounced for a daylong series of meetings with senior U.S. commanders and the newly selected Iraqi leaders, while Rice flew into Baghdad from Turkey a few hours later, AP said.

"We just want to make sure there are no seams between what we're doing politically and what we're doing militarily," Rice was quoted as telling reporters on her plane en route to Iraq.

"Secretary Rumsfeld and I are going to be there together because a lot of the work that has to be done is at that juncture between political and military," she reportedly said.
