Robotics club needs financial aid

Feb 28, 2011 (The Miami Herald - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A group of future engineers at Booker T. Washington High School is trying to raise $2,500 to compete in a robotics competition next weekend.

The Science, Engineering, Communication, Mathematics, and Enrichment Club at the Overtown high school has been trying to raise enough money to compete in the First Robotics Competition at the University of Central Florida in Oralndo Mar. 10 through 12. The club, which includes 25 members, needs at least $2,500 to attend the trip. The team has asked for donations from a department store, a local college and local engineers, as well as within their school. But so far, they've had little luck.

The team has been working everyday after school and sometimes on weekends preparing for the competition in addition to tweaking the robot they have been working on for several months now. The donors can help the team by supporting their trip to the competition while also receiving free advertising with their logo or name on the robot itself.

"SECME members are the future of the science and engineering world," club president Yanelys Mena said. "Just think of it as planting seeds for the future employees." Club advisor Dickson Bidokwu, a physics and chemistry teacher at Booker T., believes that being able to compete in the First Robotics competition would be like the "the icing on their learning experience cake." The team is receiving all types of donations from anyone who is willing to support the team.

"This is our first time participating in [the] First Robotics competition and ... putting together a robot of this scale and magnitude," Bidokwu said.

For more information on how to donate to the SECME club, please contact Bidokwu at 786-210-6415.
