Recycle your old electronics. It's the law, now. [The Herald, Rock Hill, S.C.]

(Herald (Rock Hill, SC) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) July 01--Starting today, South Carolinians who toss old televisions or computers in the trash will be breaking the law.

Last year, state lawmakers passed the electronics recycling law, making it illegal to toss items such as televisions, computers, computer monitors and printers into the solid waste system.

The devices can contain toxic substances such as lead, mercury and cadmium, which can be released into the air or land and ground water when dumped into landfills.

The state Department of Health and Environmental Control is offering suggestions on how to dispose of electronics, including recycling programs and dropping them off with manufacturers.

Here are some of the local drop-offs for electronics in York County: Rock Hill Operations Center Garage, 349 Columbia Ave.; 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday through Friday Fort Mill East Collection & Recycling Center, 1245 East S.C. 160, across from Leroy Springs Recreation Complex; 7 a.m.-7 p.m., Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday Lake Wylie Collection & Recycling Center, 102 Bethel School Road near S.C. 557; 7 a.m.-7 p.m., Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday Cotton Belt Collection & Recycling Center, 2365 S.C. 5, west of York; 7 a.m.-7 p.m., Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

To find other drop-off sites, go to scdhec.gov/environment/lwm/recycle.

Also, electronics makers are required by law to offer e-cycling programs. A list of these manufacturers also can be found on the website.
