Radisys and Mindspeed Continue Small Cell Leadership with Industry's First LTE-A Small Cell Demonstration

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. --(Business Wire)--

Mindspeed Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: MSPD), and Radisys (NASDAQ: RSYS) announced today that they will be demonstrating a proof of concept of an LTE (News - Alert)-A small cell at Mindspeed's booth at Mobile World Congress 2013 at stand 7E.104 from February 25 - 28, 2013 at the Fira Gran Via in Barcelona. The demonstration will show a small cell with carrier aggregation, connected to two radios at 700MHz and 2.6GHz carriers, but combining them into a single connection to the core network. Carrier aggregation is a critical part of 3GPP Release 10 LTE-A and is being deployed by carriers now. By combining two channels and treating them as a single pipe, it enables higher data rates and improves efficiency, while also making spectrum re-farming easier.

The proof of concept demonstration is running on Mindspeed®'s Transcede® T3300 baseband processor, designed for higher performance small cells, connected to two radios, one for each band. The software from Mindspeed for the PHY and Radisys for the small cell protocols and application runs on the T3300 and combines the two radio channels into a single IP stream to the Enhanced Packet Core (EPC).

According to iGR Inc., by the end of 2013, there will be over 150 LTE-A networks operating in approximately 70 countries worldwide.

"Wireless technology is advancing fast, from 3G to LTE and now LTE-A," said Dr. Naser Adas, senior vice president and general manger of the wireless infrastructure business unit of Minspeed. "Small cells are becoming a critical part of the network. We are leading the small cell industry, with 63% share according to Infonetics (News - Alert) Research, and we are proud to be working with Radisys to be the first companies to demonstrate an LTE-A small cell."

"Carrier aggregation is very critical for the wireless industry to meet the bandwidth demands of LTE-A," said Todd Mersch, senior director product line management, software and solutions, at Radisys. "Radisys is pleased to be at the forefront of LTE-A evolution and enabling market in successfully demonstrating features that will shape the industry in coming years."

Mindspeed's small cell SoC portfolio is the leader in the industry, in both commercial and technological terms. Mindspeed has 34 LTE small cell design engagements and is one of the first small cell SoC companies to have LTE systems commercially deployed.

Radisys' Trillium small cell software has proven critical to the advancement of small cell deployments around the world. Radisys' award-winning Trillium TOTALeNodeB is a complete software solution that is engaged in 15 active small cell trials and deployments and has secured more than 60 LTE customer wins.

Mindspeed will be hosting small cell technology demonstrations for service providers, OEM customers, press and analysts during Mobile World Congress 2013 at stand 7E.104 from February 25 - 28, 2013 at the Fira Gran Via in Barcelona, Spain.
