Radisys Introduces MediaEngine Transcode Resource Function, Helping Communications Service Providers Lower Costs and Future-proof Their Networks

Radisys® Corporation (NASDAQ: RSYS), the services acceleration company, today announced the addition of two new products to its MediaEngine™ portfolio. Radisys' MediaEngine Transcode Resource Function (TRF) products allow communications service providers to deploy transcoding as an adjunct function which scales independently from, and complements existing legacy network elements such as session border controllers (SBCs) and media gateways. By decoupling transcoding from legacy network elements, communications service providers can reduce the number of transcoding nodes in their network and eliminate the need for expensive forklift upgrades typical when adding HD transcoding capabilities to today's SBCs and media gateways. Radisys' TRF is available now and has been deployed by leading communications service providers in North America and Asia.

As service providers accelerate their deployments of VoLTE, VoWiFi and WebRTC interactive services, the need for transcoding is more important than ever. These new services have introduced complex high-definition audio and advanced video codecs into the network, leading to the need for more real-time transcoding and transrating to support service interworking and interoperability between legacy and modern devices and networks. Traditionally, media gateways and SBCs have performed network transcoding functions, but few are designed for today's complex codecs. When new codecs are introduced such as EVS or Opus, communications service providers often need to perform expensive and time-consuming forklift upgrades for their networks. Radisys' TRF allows these operators to deploy transcoding as a distinct, independently scalable function which addresses their new transcoding needs as well as extends the life of existing SBCs and media gateways already deployed in the network.

"Just as we did over 15 years ago when we pioneered the media server/MRF market, our new transcoding solutions help improve network architectures, allow communications service providers to drive down their costs and increase their abiity to adapt to ever-changing market and technical requirements," said Grant Henderson, vice president, MediaEngine and Corporate Marketing, Radisys. "Our new TRF products offer communications service providers a new, more cost-effective way to deploy transcoding, while accelerating their transition to software-centric networks."

"Radisys has been the leader and key innovator in media processing technology for over a decade," said Diane Myers, senior research director, IHS (News - Alert) Markit. "The company's commitment to developing an adjunct transcoding approach will allow for independent scaling and the deployment of new services across media types, all while protecting SBC investments. Radisys' TRF is an exciting addition to the MediaEngine family and a new twist on the principles of decomposition enabled by the IMS architecture."

About the MediaEngine™ TRF

Radisys' MediaEngine TRF is available in both a virtualized network function and an optimized hardware platform, providing communications service providers with flexibility to choose the option that meets their scaling requirements. The MediaEngine TRF-12000 offers advanced IP media transcoding and transrating capabilities with the scalability and proven reliability required to meet the needs of the world's largest service providers to deliver HD voice and advanced video services. The MediaEngine Virtualized TRF (vTRF) delivers carrier-class transcoding in a software-only offering with performance-tuned virtualization support, compatibility with NFV architectures, and cloud deployment capabilities. Radisys' vTRF can be deployed on any Intel (News - Alert)-based server and supports VMWare, KVM, Openstack and deployment in public clouds including Amazon EC2.

Both the MediaEngine TRF-12000 and vTRF deliver a breadth of audio and video features today, including the following:

  • Support for a broad range of audio codecs including EVS - the newest HD audio codec used in mobile networks, Opus for Over the Top and WebRTC applications, and video codecs such as VP8 and H.264
  • Flexible control interface integration options, including SIP (RFC 3261) B2BUA in-line call control, and SIP (RFC 4117) for transcoding under the control of third-party Telephony Application Servers (TAS) or Call Session Control Function (CSCF) control
  • Advanced voice quality enhancement (VQE) features, including acoustic echo cancelation, noise reduction and packet loss concealment
