QuickPlay Media Boosts Cloud Encoding Capabilities for HD Multiscreen Services
TORONTO --(Business Wire)--
QuickPlay
Media, Inc., the leading provider of managed solutions for the
distribution of premium video to IP-connected devices, today announced
new enhancements to its OpenVideo platform that will improve encoding
efficiency for delivering HD video and provide additional capacity for
large customer deployments. The latest version of OpenVideo enables TV
service providers to efficiently and cost-effectively deliver high
volume HD multiscreen video services to customers across more than 300
different device families including smartphone, tablet and Connected TVs
- with 99.9+ percent uptime.
According to a recent
survey of U.S. mobile subscribers, 81 percent of mobile video users
indicated that they watch more mobile TV and/or video on their
smartphone or tablet than they did a year ago. This increase in demand,
combined with a fast growing ecosystem of IP-connected devices, has
required service providers to dramatically scale their operations to be
able to encode, store and securely deliver multiple versions of the same
high-quality video. HD has created additional challenges due to the
larger file sizes and associated complexities of managing content
security. QuickPlay's cloud-based OpenVideo platform eliminates the need
for operators to purchase and manage their own encoding hardware, and
streamlines their encoding processes, enabling them to scale their
multiscreen services and support new devices as they come to market.
Enhancments to the encoding features in the OpenVideo platform include:
-
A grid-based architecture that enhances the handling and processing of
HD mezzanine files, reducing processing time and improving the
delivery of HD content to devices such as the new iPad and Samsung (News - Alert)
Connected TVs. The architecture allows customers to use a private
cloud and simultaneously leverage public cloud services such as Amazon
EC2, as needed;
-
A module-based workflow engine that allows QuickPlay to customize
processes such as content collection, transcoding, Digital Rights
Management (DRM) and dynamic or static insertion of advertising based
on customer defined business logic. The OpenVideo workflow engine can
also accommodate third-party quality control tools, Content Delivery
Networks (CDN) and third-party Content Management Systems (CMS);
-
The addition of new industry standards for metadata collection.
QuickPlay's OpenVideo platform is now fully compatible with CableLabs (News - Alert)®
Content 3.0 specifications. This enables more efficient collection of
metadata and publishing to external CableLabs compliant CMS; and
-
An enhanced automated engine to improve performance reporting and
analytics. The new functionality provides greater transparency into
the encoding process by providing a comprehensive dashboard and
notification system for detailed monitoring against defined SLAs.
"A new report from Javelin Strategy and Research predicts the tablet
market will grow by 40 percent over the next four years, with
approximately 90 million people in the U.S. owning a tablet device by
that time," said Wayne Purboo, QuickPlay Founder and CEO. "With this
widespread adoption comes a surge in demand for high-quality live and on
demand HD content. The upcoming 2012 Summer Olympic Games, for example,
will be viewed by millions of consumers on mobile devices. The latest
version of our OpenVideo platform enables service providers to cost
effectively meet both the rapidly growing demand for VOD and Live HD
multiscreen services and the strict security requirements of content
providers."
QuickPlay recently announced
a series of upgraded content security features to its OpenVideo
platform, which securely manages content from ingestion through
consumption. QuickPlay's customers include leading companies such as
AT&T (News - Alert) U-verse, Bell, TVB, Verizon, Rogers, Samsung and SIRIUS XM. The
company currently manages more than 1.5 million content assets across
more than three thousand content providers, delivering more than 40
million downloads/streams each month.
