Quango boss resigns over bankruptcy [Edition 2] [Sunday Mirror (England)]

(Sunday Mirror (England) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) A TORY crony of David Cameron's who was hired to run a Pounds 60billion quango has been forced to resign after he was exposed as bankrupt for not paying his taxes.

David Cameron said he had no idea businessman Tony Caplin had been declared bankrupt in May 2012. Mr Caplin ran the PM's stockbroking firm and was Conservative chief operating officer when Mr Cameron became party leader.

He had been in charge of the Public Works Loans Board - the Treasury body responsible for Pounds 60billion loans for projects like roads, schools and hospitals.

Downing Street said: "He should have declared he was bankrupt. This has been pointed out to him and as a result he has resigned." Labour MP Margaret Hodge said: "It is not acceptable for ministers to hand out jobs to Tory cronies without proper scrutiny." (c) 2014 ProQuest Information and Learning Company; All Rights Reserved.
