Qtel slashes overseas call rates

(Qatar Tribune Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) DOHA Mobile users in Qatar never had it so good.

Close on the heels of Vodafone Qatar's second international promotional, Qtel on Sunday announced that all Shahry as well as Hala subscribers could call overseas at the flat rate of 55 dirhams a minute on all days of a week until January 15.

Earlier, Vodafone, the second player in the market, had cut its tariff for a number of Asian destinations (see chart).

It is charging QR1.22 a minute for the United Kingdom, the USA and most other destinations.

Vodafone recently SMSed to all its customers the rate for the country they call most.

They can take advantage of promotional rates to other countries as well.

Promotional tariffs apart, Vodafone has now permanently lowered their regular international calling rate from QR2.50 to QR1.95 per minute for calls to destinations not currently covered by a promotional.

Lower tariffs have seen the Vodafone international calls volume shoot up to over 50 million minutes, the telecom operator said on Sunday.

"Our customers appreciate Vodafone call rates that are available to all customers with no additional purchases required.

We promise to continue to provide them with great value," Vodafone Chief Marketing Officer Michael Portz said.

Perhaps, in response to Vodafone's attractive tariffs, Qtel has come up with Sunday's rate cut for all overseas calls on Hala as well as Shahry, reducing it to 55 Dirhams per minute all day, every day of a week until January 15, 2010.

The new offer comes as part of Qtel's "Fuel Your Senses" campaign.

"These exceptional rates mean that you can call people overseas whenever you want and for as long as you want and enjoy incredible value," said Chief Executive Officer of Qtel, Nasser Marafih.

"Today's offer delivers real value for people looking to call abroad, supported by a strong network that ensures they'll always get through with great call quality.

We hope everybody enjoys this fantastic new offer and gets the most out of their overseas calls with Qtel," said Dr Nasser Marafih.

Besides this, Qtel's Dawli MENA and Dawli ASIA offer customers a special rate for a number of popular destinations for only Dirham 45 a minute .

With both the telecom operators slashing international call tariffs to encourage customers to make more overseas calls, people in the country are having a gala time, talking more and paying less.
