PTA directs Internet service providers to check illegal call termination

Islamabad, Jun 05, 2009 (Asia Pulse Data Source via COMTEX) -- Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has directed all Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to ensure that their networks are not used for illegal call/voice termination and such cases of grey telephony are brought into the notice of PTA immediately.

These directions were issued in a meeting on the issue of Grey Traffic held at PTA Headquarters. The meeting was chaired by Chairman PTA, Dr.Mohammed Yaseen. Members and senior officers of the Authority were also present in the meeting.

It was observed that ISP bandwidth and Internet Protocol (IP) addresses are being used for the termination of illegal voice. The Authority expressed its concern on the lack of responsibility being shown by some ISPs which had been counselled and warned continuously. It was decided that all ISPs will remain vigilant and ensure that their networks are not used for voice termination and they also take action against grey users.

It was directed that the report of such actions should be provided to the Authority.

In case if an ISP customer is found terminating voice, strict action will be taken against the customer and the ISP itself. It was also noticed that some ISPs are providing service to Call Centres, whereas it is the right of PTA Local Loop and LDI licensees to provide them network access and bandwidth for carrying voice respectively.

The Authority decided that all Call Centres will be informed through the media that they should take bandwidth and IPs from the legitimate Service providers i.e. LDIs or LL through LDI.
