Progress Software Announces Availability of OpenEdge 10.1B Platform

BEDFORD, Mass. --(Business Wire)-- Progress Software Corporation (NASDAQ: PRGS), a provider of leading application infrastructure software to develop, deploy, integrate and manage business applications, today announces the immediate availability of the Progress(R) OpenEdge(R) 10.1B platform. This latest release offers several enhancements to help businesses become even more productive with support for large scale data management.

"As our customers and partners adopt Software-as-a-Service and Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) strategies, the need for high availability and scalability becomes crucial," said Betty Zakheim, director of Product Marketing at Progress Software. "With the OpenEdge 10.1B platform, Progress continues to deliver the same low maintenance and ease of administration our customers have come to expect, but with the level of scalability and data management that these new architectural models require."

The OpenEdge platform is the first integrated platform optimized for the development and deployment of service-oriented business applications. It isolates developers from the complexities of today's computing environments, allowing them to concentrate on what really matters - creating the business logic of their application. Systems built on the OpenEdge platform are portable, reliable and scalable, yet require fewer administrative resources than other deployment platforms.

"Migrating to the OpenEdge 10.1B platform was seamless," said Patrick Elsen, manager of research and development for M-Soft. "With very little system modifications we were able to have our Progress V9 applications up and running on the OpenEdge 10.1B platform in under an hour. Try that with competing platforms."

The OpenEdge 10.1B release also provides companies with the powerful tools required for enterprise-sized database challenges. For instance, the product's data management enhancements broaden capabilities for extremely large table support such as the ability to grow database tables to upwards of trillions of rows, which assures customers that their data is always available and accessible, and that it provides increased data scalability and availability. In addition, benchmark testing has shown that the OpenEdge platform has near linear scalability with up to 30,000 simultaneous users.

"OpenEdge 10.1B provides a 20% increase in overall system performance compared to previous releases," said Don Beattie, senior developer at GLA International. "This enables GLA to transact dozens of concurrent batch billing jobs each handling millions of records."

Because its development environment is built upon the recently upgraded Eclipse 3.2 standard, developers can seamlessly extend the OpenEdge platform to other common development tools. Enhanced object-oriented capabilities in ABL (Advanced Business Language), Progress' 4GL programming language, improve code reuse and assure better interoperability with other object oriented applications.

"The power and flexibility of ABL combined with object oriented extensions has significantly increased our development productivity," said Warren Bailey, director of information systems for the Oppenheimer Group. "Only with ABL can you mix procedural coding with object orientation to build rich, extensible business applications."

The OpenEdge 10.1B release also adds support for 64-bit data formats and broadens the range of platform support to include Linux and 64-bit Power PC. OpenEdge 10 offers an easy to maintain application environment that customers can depend on today and grow with tomorrow.
