Profile of China's telecom industry in September 2011


BEIJING, Oct 31, 2011 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- The following is a profile of China's telecom industry in the first nine months of 2011: -- Overview China's telecom industry registered 870.95 billion yuan in business volume in first nine months of 2011, up 15.9 percent year on year. Its main operating turnover totaled 734.26 billion yuan in the period, up 10.0 percent from the corresponding period of a year earlier.



The following chart (Chart 1) shows the industry's main operating turnover in 2008-2011.

-- Subscribers The sector registered 11.856 million new phone subscribers in September, bringing the total up to 1,240.738 million. The number of fixed phone users decreased by 363,000, and that of mobile phone users grew 12.220 million in the month.


In the first nine months of 2011, the number of fixed phone users in China plunged by 5.908 million to 288.433 million. The Personal Handyphone System users fell in number by 8.353 million to 20.280 million, with its proportion in fixed phone users dropping to 7.0 percent from 9.7 percent at the end of 2010.

The following Chart 2 shows the number of newly added fixed phone users in 2008-2011.

The number of mobile phone subscribers increased 93.302 million in the January-September period, boosting the total number to 952.305 million. Meanwhile, China's 3G service subscribers grew 55.406 million to 102.457 million.

The following Chart 3 shows detailed monthly figures in 2008-2011.

More basic telecom operators' Internet users have adopted broadband access services.

In the first nine months of 2011, the number of Internet broadband access users rose by 23.641 million to 149.932 million, while that of dial up Internet services retreated by 198,000 million to 5.703 million.

The following Chart 4 shows the number of new Internet broadband users in 2008-2011.

-- Business Structure The two charts below (Chart 5 and 6) compare the revenue structures of China's main telecom businesses in the January-September period of 2010 and 2011, respectively.

Revenues from mobile communications grew by 13.9 percent year on year to 529.65 billion yuan in the first nine months of 2011; and those from fixed-line communications climbed 0.8 percent year on year to 204.62 billion yuan, with the proportion in the industry's main operating turnover dwindling to 27.87 percent from 30.39 percent for the same period of 2010.

The following Table 1 compares the traffic volume of local fixed line phone calls with mobile phone calls in the January-September period of 2010 and 2011.

Chart 9 reveals how much growth each region was able to capture in mobile phone users.

Below, Chart 10 ranks the top 10 provinces and municipalities in terms of revenues from telecom businesses in January to September 2011.

Guangdong province led the country by numbers of fixed and mobile phone users.
