Profile of China's telecom industry in 2009

BEIJING, Feb 23, 2010 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- The following is a profile of Chin a's telecom industry from January to December in 2009: -- Overview China's telecom industry realized 2.57 trillion yuan of busines s volume in 2009, up 14.4 percent year on year. Its main business reve nue totaled 842.43 billion yuan, up 3.9 percent. The fixed asset inves tment reached 372.49 billion yuan, up 26.1 percent on year. The indust ry's added value meanwhile climbed 7 percent to 501.22 billion yuan.



The composite price of China's telecom industry decreased 9 per cent below that of 2008. The following Chart 1 displays the growth rat es of the industry's composite price from 2005 to 2009: -- Telecom users The industry reported 79.47 million new phone subscribers in 20 09, bringing the total number up to 1.06 billion. The number of mobile phone users made up 70.4 percent of total phone users. There were 400 million more mobile phone users than fixed phone users in 2009.

Table 1 below shows the total number and growth of phone users from 2005 to 2009: Table 1: Total number and growth of phone users in 2005-2009 Unit 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 Total million 743.85 828.84 912.73 981.60 1061.07 Growth million 97.27 84.99 83.89 68.66 79.47 Below, Chart 2 graphs the proportion of mobile phone users to t he total from 2005 to 2009: The number of mobile phone subscribers increased 106.14 million in 2009, boosting the total number to 747.38 million. That year witne ssed the largest expansion of mobile phone users in history. The incre mental monthly growth of new mobile phone users in March 2009 reached 10.55 million, more than in any other month ever. The coverage of mobi le phones reached 56.3 percent of the total population, up 7.8 percent since the end of 2008.


The following Chart 3 shows the figures of newly added mobile p hone users from 2006 to 2009: The number of mobile packet data users increased 129.24 million to 384.56 million in 2009. The proportion of mobile packet data busin esses climbed to 51.5 percent from 39.8 percent at the end of 2008.

The total number of fixed phone users reached 313.69 million in 2009, down 26.67 million. The figure of urban fixed phone users reach ed 211.78 million, losing 19.78 million. Further, that of rural fixed phone users climbed to 101.91 million, fallen by 6.89 million. The cov erage of fixed phone users topped 23.6 per hundred people, down 2.2 pe r hundred than the end of 2008.

The following Chart 4 shows the number of newly added fixed pho ne users from 2007 to 2009: The number of traditional fixed phone users hit 267.69 million, down 3.73 million. The number of subscribers to the Personal Handypho ne System (PHS) shrank 22.94 million to 45.99 million during 2009, wit h its proportion to fixed phone users dropping to 14.7 percent from 20 .3 percent by the end of 2008.

The following Chart 5 indicates the proportion of PHS users to fixed phone users from 2005 to 2009: Household phone users account for the vast majority of the fixe d phone users in China. Due to plunging PHS users, the proportion of h ousehold phone users decreased 4.6 percentage points in 2009. Governme nt and company phone users saw continued growth over this period. Thei r proportion to the total also went up year on year. The proportion of public phone users saw a slight rise to 8.6 percent.

The following Chart 6 presents the proportions of household pho ne users, government and company phone users, and public phone users t o total fixed phone users from 2005 to 2009: The number of netizens in China totalled 384 million in 2009, u p 86 million. Internet coverage topped 28.9 percent in that same perio d. The figure of broadband netizens hit 346 million, up 76 million, an d accounted for 90.1 percent of the total. That of mobile phone netize ns reached 233 million, up 120 million, or 60.8 percent of the total.

The figure of rural netizens saw an increase of 22 million to 107 mill ion, taking 27.8 percent of the total.

The following Chart 7 indicates the number of netizens and Inte rnet coverage in China from 2005 to 2009: In 2009, the number of Internet broadband users rose 20.35 mill ion to 103.23 million, while that of dial up Internet service users de clined by 3.57 million to 8.71 million.

The call dura tion of domestic long distance calls reached 434.6 billion minutes, up 7.8 percent year on year. That of international long distance calls t opped 2.14 billion minutes, down 14.2 percent. Long distance calls to Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan amounted to 2.02 billion minutes, down 9 percent.

The duration of fixed phone long distance calls and IP calls dr opped 6.3 percent and 15.1 percent, respectively, to 82.56 billion min utes and 118.56 billion minutes, and that of mobile phone long distanc e calls went up 31.8 percent to 237.64 billion minutes.

Calls from mobile phones amounted to 69.39 billion minutes, down 3.3 p ercent year on year. The proportion of IP calls made from mobile phone s rose to 58.5 percent in 2009 from 51 percent at the end of 2008.

Chart 12 compares the traffic volume of IP calls from both fixe d phones and mobile phones from 2007 to 2009: The traffic volume of short messages topped 784.04 billion arti cles in 2009, up 8.4 percent year on year. That of PHS short messages and mobile phone short messages reached 12.74 billion and 771.3 billio n articles, respectively, down 45.6 percent and up 10.2 percent.

The following Chart 13 indicates the traffic volume of mobile p hone short messages and PHS short messages from 2005 to 2009: -- Business structure China's telecommunications business revenues topped 870.73 bill ion yuan in 2009, up 4.1 percent year on year. Its main business reven ues totaled 842.43 billion yuan, up 3.9 percent.

The fixed asset investment in China's telecom industry reached 372.49 billion yuan, up 26.1 percent on year.

The length of long distance fiber-optic cable increas ed 39,000 km to 837,000 km. The capacity of fixed long distance phone switchboards expanded 151,000 terminals year on year to 17.06 million terminals in 2009. The capacity of telephone central offices (includin g access facilities) dropped 16.44 million gates to 492.19 million gat es. That of mobile phone switchboards meanwhile went up 275.8 million to 1421.11 million. The number of broadband Internet access ports of b asic telecom companies increased by 27.02 million to 135.92 million.

-- Telecom value-added business revenues Value-added business revenues of basic telecom companies reache d 192.3 billion yuan in 2009, up 12.8 percent year on year, and its pr oportion to the main business revenues rose to 22.8 percent from 21.3 percent at the end of 2008.

The following Chart 15 shows the value-added business revenues and their proportions to main business revenues of China's basic telec om companies from 2005 to 2009: -- Prospect of China's telecom industry The main business revenues of China's telecom industry are expe cted to top 880 billion yuan in 2010, up 4.5 percent year on year. The total business volume is expected to reach 2876.2 billion yuan, up 12 percent year on year and the number of fixed phone users is expected to drop 28 million to 285 million. Those of mobile phone users and Int ernet broadband users see forecasted increases of 108 million and 20 m illion, respectively, to 855 million and 123 million.

The comprehensive charges of China's telecom industry are expec ted to decrease 9 percent in 2010.
