Presenting an Easter cantata [The Dickinson Press, N.D.]
(Dickinson Press (ND) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Apr. 4--The State Line Ministerial Association, which includes churches in Beach, Golva and Wibaux, Mont., are presenting an Easter cantata titled "Jesus, Son of God."
The performance is 7 p.m. on Wednesday in the Beach High School gymnasium. The public is invited and the freewill donation will go to the local food pantry.
"This is the second time we've done it," said Director Elaine Zachmann.
The cantata was presented two years ago. Last year, the benefit was a songfest, complete with slide shows of the previous cantata.
"This year, we start with the story of Jesus, from the annunciation of Mary through the Nativity. We move into His baptism and Jesus calling of the apostles. There's a scene where he works with the children. We go into the Last Supper, the crucifixion and the resurrection scene," she said.
She estimates the cast has about 50 people, with an additional 50 singing with the community choir. The story is told through narration.
Zachmann said finding rehearsal time during the spring has been challenging with the weather and calving.
"We work around that. It all jells together," she said.
The cast will be in costumes that were sewn together by volunteers or simple sheets picked up at rummage sales, she said.
Zachmann is using her skills as a teacher and church choir director to coordinate the cantata. Jill Tescher is directing the choir, while Walt Losenski, in collaboration with K-Hook, is providing the lighting and sound system.
She said the cast varies from a 4-year-old child to adults in their 70s. Churches are bringing in their choir members, while the First Lutheran Church is providing hand bells as a prelude.
"It's the talents of the community -- just about everything," she said.
Ed Nistler, who plays Judas and a scribe, said he was "volunteered" to play the parts by the director.
"Everybody has costumes. You've got to see the costumes," he said.
Kim Lundberg, who plays Mary, said, "It's fun to be part of something of the significance."
"When it all come stogether, it's a beatiful show," added Harry Zachmann. "You've got to come for the program -- that's when it sinks in."
