Lagos, Jul 20, 2009 (Daily Independent/All Africa Global Media via COMTEX) -- Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have smashed a notorious robbery gang that specialised in car snatching.

The command following the breakthrough also recovered 22 exotic cars comprising jeeps from the gang.

The three suspects arrested in connection with the recovered cars were among the suspected criminals paraded on Friday at the Lagos State police headquarters, Ikeja by the Commissioner of Police, Marvel Akpoyibo.

They included a fake journalist, who specialise in duping unsuspecting victims under the guise that he is an editor of one of the national newspapers, fake military officer carrying an identity card with a forged signature of Lagos State Commissioner of Police, robbers who specialise in snatching motorcycles popularly known as ,okada, and a suspected NITEL cable thief.

Akpoyibo disclosed that the operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) Panti Street, Yaba smashed the car robbery syndicate, which has its operational base outside Lagos and specialises in snatching exotic and state-of-the-art cars from innocent Nigerians and moving them to remote parts of the country and neighbouring countries.

According to him, on April 16 after an attempt by the syndicate to rob motorists on Lagos-Ibadan expressway was foiled by the police and security conscious citizens, police operatives combed the scene of the crime and successfully recovered some incriminating items, including personal identity cards, mobile phones and a baseball cap suspected to have fallen off from the fleeing bandits.
