Police check out package under car

Aug 09, 2010 (Messenger-Inquirer - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The Owensboro Police Department Hazardous Device Unit and the Kentucky State Police Bomb Squad responded Sunday afternoon to a suspicious package under a passenger car in the 3300 block of Christie Place.

The package was removed from under a silver 2001 Buick LeSabre owned by Eugene Evans Jr. and rendered safe, according to Sgt. David Powell of OPD. Powell would not describe the contents of the package because it is part of the investigation.

"At no point was the public ever in danger with the device," Powell said. "We evacuated the immediate area as a precaution because we didn't know.

"A concerned citizen called it in (at 5:02 p.m.), and a patrolman was dispatched. I'm not sure if it was a citizen or the car owner who called." About a dozen homes were evacuated.

The size of the package was about 1-foot by 1-foot.

"We did notice wires sticking outside the box, which is what prompted the response of the hazardous device unit," Powell said.

The department's robot viewed the package and removed it from under the car.

"Our investigator did not manipulate the device until we were confident that it was safe for him to do so," Powell said. "It was not officially rendered safe until the hazardous device unit technician physically opened it.

"It was about three hours from the time of the initial call to the package being rendered safe." About a dozen police officers and eight firefighters were on the scene, including investigators and the evidence collection unit.

Powell said OPD's Hazardous Device Unit responds to suspicious packages in Owensboro or assists other agencies about 10 times a year.
