picoChip Showcases WiMAX 16e Reference Design At WiMAX World

VIENNA, Austria --(Business Wire)-- May 23, 2006 -- picoChip, the leader in multi-core DSPs for advanced wireless and the industry-standard for WiMAX infrastructure, has demonstrated its reference design for mobile WiMAX (IEEE 802.16e-2005) at WiMAX World Europe. The picoChip software-upgradeable system is a comprehensive and cost-effective implementation of 16e for both WiMAX Wave 1 and Wave 2 profiles.

picoChip's PHY is the de facto industry standard, and has been selected by CETECOM - the WiMAX Forum's approved testing laboratory for the certification of WiMAX products - for use in its protocol conformance tester. It supports all the standard WiMAX frequencies and profiles in use globally, and it also supports FDD as well as TDD.

In addition to providing complete and efficient 16e functionality, the development platform offers scalable support for multi-sector systems, Advanced Antenna Systems (AAS) and Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO), with an optional software upgrade from ArrayComm. This capability offers the flexibility to scale designs from small basestations up to large multi-sector AAS/MIMO systems. The reference design also includes a third-party radio for AAS/MIMO, and can also support OBSAI RP3-1 and CPRI variants for remote radio units.

"This is far more than just a demonstration of our capability," commented Rupert Baines, VP Marketing at picoChip, "It's a comprehensive reference design using parts that are already proven in their field and which have gained type approval in working systems. We look forward to beginning interoperability testing."

picoChip is partnering with Wintegra on a complete reference design, which integrates picoChip's multi-core digital signal processor running its 16e PHY with the Wintegra WinMAX(TM) access packet processor programmed with 16e upper and lower MAC software for transport and flexible backhaul functionality. The cost-effective design is readily upgradeable, making it easy for OEMs to customize to their own requirements.

About picoChip

picoChip, located in Bath, England, is dedicated to providing innovative, flexible wireless solutions to help equipment makers minimize time-to-market, costs, and system power consumption.

The heart of the company's offering is a scaleable, multi-processor baseband IC that combines the computational density of a dedicated ASIC with the programmability of a traditional high end Digital Signal Processor. This radically reduces both development time and materials cost and enables the strategic goal of the "Software Defined Radio". The company has the most comprehensive reference designs in the industry, with complete, standard-compliant solutions for both UMTS (including HSDPA) and WiMAX (802.16d upgradeable to 802.16e).
