Photo Release -- Protea Releases New Proteomics Technology Platform

(GlobeNewswire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) MORGANTOWN, W.Va., Feb. 3, 2009 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Protea Biosciences, Inc., a leader in the development of new protein research technology, announced today the commercial launch of its new protein recovery technology platform, the GPR-800. Protea's new instrument offers the simultaneous recovery of eight proteins from gels in less than 20 minutes.

"Our new GPR-800 benchtop instrument uses an advanced, proprietary, multichannel microfluidic chip technology, and is an important advance in the proteomics field," stated Reid Asbury, PhD., Protea's Director of Marketing. "Because it allows the biologist to prepare 'mass spectrometry ready' protein samples in a fraction of the time, we believe the GPR-800 represents a major breakthrough and productivity advancement for today's busy proteomics research laboratory," he added.

The GPR-800 system uses a novel protein surfactant that solubilizes the protein, then degrades, eliminating any interference with the mass spectrometer. The GPR-800 plastic microchips allow recovery in a closed system, with minimal dead volume, assuring no introduction of contaminants.

The GPR-800 instrument system opens up many new exciting applications including top down proteomic experiments and analysis of modification states of proteins. Researchers can quickly determine the accurate intact mass of their gel separated proteins using mass spectrometry.

Protea Biosciences, Inc. (www.proteabio.com) was founded to develop and commercialize new technology that improves the recovery, identification and characterization of proteins in biological samples. The company markets new protein research products and services to pharmaceutical, biotechnology and academic research laboratories worldwide.
