'Personal situations' force resignation of Davis school board member

Nov 06, 2009 (The Salt Lake Tribune - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Cheryl Werven resigned this week from the Davis County School Board of Education "due to some serious personal situations" that she says prevent her from "devoting the time and energy the position deserves." "It was a very difficult decision to make," said Werven who served seven years on the board and ran unopposed in the past election. "But I just can't devote the time." Werven also recently moved out of her home and outside the boundaries of Precinct 6 spanning Clearfield, Layton and Syracuse, making her ineligible for her seat. But she says the move is temporary.

Her resignation is effective Dec. 31.

The Davis board will appoint someone to serve the rest of Werven's term, which ends in December 2010. They have 30 days to interview candidates and make a decision, or the task falls to Davis County commissioners, district spokesman Christopher Williams said. "We're not sure when that [30-day] window starts, when the board accepts the letter or the date when she is no longer in office." Earlier this week, Davis Board President Marian Storey praised Werven, saying, "You have brought another dimension that we didn't have. I think you are the [board member] who has children in school at the present time...You have contributed a great deal and we shall miss you." kstewart@sltrib.com To see more of The Salt Lake Tribune, or to subscribe to the newspaper, go to http://www.sltrib.com.
