'Parliament to discuss time frame for data retention'

Jul 06, 2009 (DMEUROPE via COMTEX) -- The Dutch Parliament higher house will this evening discuss the obligation for telecom and internet companies to retain client call and mail data for at least one year, as set out in the Dutch telecommunication law. The data is there for the police and other such authorities in case of an investigation into a serious crime or into terrorism activities. A proposed change in the law was influenced by the fact that most EU members keep the data for only six months.

Different parties have spoken about the cost of keeping the data for one year, and its real use in catching criminals, as well as the privacy issues around such data. Minister of Justice Hirsch Ballin said he wants a measured and not rushed discussion over the matter, with representatives from all seven political parties.
