Papillion has $7.57 million sales tax gain

(Omaha World-Herald (NE) (KRT) Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Mar. 10--With a $7.57 million increase in taxable sales, Papillion accounted for the lion's share, and a big lion at that, of an $8.11 million increase in Sarpy County in December.

December was the second full month that two new anchor stores, a Wal-Mart Supercenter and a Kohl's, were open at a new Papillion shopping center, Market Pointe.

A 47.6 percent increase in Papillion sales from December 2005 to December last year followed a 46.9 percent year-over-year increase in November.

Papillion's sales were $23.48 million in December, out of $96.99 million in Sarpy County. Sales fell 1 percent to $38.54 million in Bellevue. La Vista gained 4.6 percent to $19.98 million.

Statewide, sales of goods and services subject to state sales tax rose 2.9 percent to $2.45 billion over December 2005, according to the latest available figures from the State Revenue Department. Taxable sales are one measure of health of the retail sector. Nontaxed items include groceries.

Sales fell in most of the bigger retail centers.

Sales in the state dropped, but the overall figure increased $68.94 million because of an $86.5 million increase in nonresident sales, those made by out-of-state catalog operations, for example.

Holding down the taxable sales figures last year were the removal in January 2006 of the tax on purchases of manufacturing machinery and in July on home-remodeling labor.

Sales in Omaha fell just under 1 percent to $786.87 million, and, as a result, sales for all of Douglas County fell by just under one-half of 1 percent to $805.04 million.

Lincoln sales also dropped, by 2.9 percent, to $331.88 million. Sales for all of Lancaster County, $10 million more than Lincoln alone, fell 3.2 percent.

Sales fell in North Platte by 3.8 percent, in Norfolk by 2.9 percent, in Scottsbluff by less than 1 percent, in Columbus by 1 percent and in Hastings by 1.8 percent. Kearney sales rose by six-tenths of a percent, and sales in Fremont by just under 1 percent.

The state collected $134.91 million on December sales, $3.56 million more than in December 2005.

Sales of new cars and trucks, not included in the figures above, rose 5.9 percent in December to $192.68 million.
