Outsourced Device Modeling for a Telecom OSS SI

Success Story Outsourced Device Modeling for a Telecom OSS SI Over last 5 years, BSI is working with a leading Telecom OSS ISV in Outsourced Product Engineering Services and Professional Services.

During this period BSI is involved in following areas of:
Re-engineering of the product from legacy to modern technology platform
Development, maintenance and testing of multiple versions of this product
 Global L2 and L3 support
Professional services in the area of customization and integration

Business Need

A leading Australian Telco carrier embarked on a major transformation strategy which aimed at overhauling its back office systems in an effort to cut out more than 1,000 existing software systems and save more than US$200 million during the next six years. This transformation includes replacing its current set of operational support systems (OSS) and business support systems (BSS). The new OSS systems are expected to help in the consolidation process and provide the software platforms underpinning the US$8 billion "Network Transformation Project". The carrier currently has 1,252 OSS systems (in fault management, provisioning, Inventory Management, Service Assurance etc.) and BSS systems (Mediation, billing, customer relationship management). It plans to reduce that number by 75 percent, or about 940, in the next three years, and by 80 percent, or 1,002, in the next five years, taking it down to 250 systems in total.

As part of the OSS transformation, the carrier selected the Cramer6 OSS Suite, to reduce complexity and costs associated with bringing new Internet Protocol (IP)-based services to its wireline, wireless and broadband customers. BSI, a long-term development partner of Cramer, was tasked with modelling the devices in the network inventory which included the complete list of devices (Cisco (News - Alert) Routers and Switches, Juniper routers) for the IP-MPLS solution. The overall schedule was very tight and required to be executed cost-effectively and optimally. BSI established its team at Cramers facility in Bath and executed this task optimally using an onsite/offshore model. The remote infrastructure holding the Configurator instance was located at Bath, UK. An initial phase for determining the requirements specifications was executed in Australia. The subsequent activities were then carried out remotely. A total of 50 devices were modelled. The process involved 8 major steps:
1. Identifying the Devices related to the Core IP MPLS solution
2. Requirement Analysis for all the devices and captured in Device Model Templates (DMT (News - Alert))
3. Review of DMT with the Telco SME
4. Set-up the remote Configurator Instance in Bath
5. Device modelling done by BSI team at Bath
6. Set-up test environment in Bath
7. Designed unit test cases and executed in RM
8. Exported/Delivered the configured metadata in xml format to the Melbourne team
Client Benefits
Meeting tight timelines and budgets through a do-work-best-where-best-suited approach
Strong expertise on the Cramer product enabled a quick ramp-up into execution and minimized initial training and setup time this was relevant due to the tight timelines set for the project
