Online series set in Bloomington

Jun 28, 2009 (Herald-Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Open auditions are being held locally for a new gay-themed online series that will be set and filmed in Bloomington.

Evan McMahon, who also blogs at www.badevan.com, said he created "American Queer" partly in response to his belief that TV shows only portray GLBT characters either as comic relief or overtly sexual.

"I started asking, 'What would I want to watch?'" he said.

McMahon and his friends wrote a movie script, which morphed into a series. The group formed Aequitas Media, and founded online television channel AMBC.TV.

He said the online channel will show "American Queer" and more than a dozen other new shows this fall, including news broadcasts, a game show and a cooking show. The shows will be available for free.

The dramatic series will follow the lives of 10 fictional gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and straight characters in their 20s living in Bloomington, focusing on their struggles with identity, family and the universal search for love and happiness, McMahon said.

Production for "American Queer" will begin in early August, and the show is slated to be available online by October. There will be 16 episodes of "American Queer," and the production schedule will cover eight weeks.

McMahon said producers are still searching for several main characters and will host an open audition at 11 a.m. today at Rachael's Cafe, 300 E. Third St.

Those appearing for an audition should bring a copy of a prepared three- to five-minute monologue and a resume. Producers are also still seeking people for supportive roles and extras.

McMahon, who declared himself a "townie," attended Bloomington High School South and is in his late 20s. He said this is his first foray into producing, but said his experience includes working in the online division of a San Francisco-based studio and doing on-set rewrites for several independent films.
