See 'Casablanca'

The Bluffs Arts Council and the Council Bluffs Parks and Recreation Department are teaming up to offer music and movies in Bayliss Park throughout the summer.


The movie on Friday, Aug. 8, is "Casablanca." It will begin at dusk.

Authors and artists

Confluence bookstore, 505 Cornhusker Road in Bellevue, will host its Wine & Sign event Saturday, Aug. 9, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Authors, including Tom Becka, Jeff Barnes and Olympian Jeff Galloway, will sell and sign their books.

Jeanne Cejka-Gregory, Susan Anderson, Jim Lamb and others will have their artwork on display.

Walk for diabetes

More than 5,000 walkers from local corporations, families, schools and other organizations are expected to turn out Saturday, Aug. 9, for the 17th annual Walk to Cure Diabetes for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

This year's walk will be from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Lewis & Clark Landing at Heartland of America Park.

Entire families can participate in the walk, which will include food, games, clowns, face painting and popular cartoon character Scooby-Doo.

The walk is approximately two miles, with a three-mile option.

Classic auto show

Enjoy the classics Saturday, Aug. 9, during the third annual "Magnificent Motors & Memories" Classic Car, Truck and Motorcycle Show 2008.

The event, sponsored by South Omaha American Legion Post 331, will be from noon to 4 p.m. at 4830 S. 21st St.

The public is invited to enjoy the car show along with a beer garden, food booths and raffles.

Live reptile expo

Children can see more than 200 pounds of live reptiles Saturday, Aug. 9, during a free back-to-school interactive expo.

The event, which is sponsored by Boys Town Pediatrics, will be at 11 a.m. at Village Pointe Center Court, 168th Street and West Dodge Road.

Experience live "Reptiles Up-Close and Personal," by David Nieves.

Parents are invited to listen to a short presentation on the importance of immunizations, annual checkups and nutritious lunches.

Balloon art, face painting, door prizes and a healthy-snack station will be available.

Animals take center stage

The Pottawattamie County Conservation Board is hosting a traveling exhibit to help expose Iowans to the issues surrounding area animals.

Animals Among Us, a traveling exhibit, will be on display through Sept. 20 at the Hitchcock Nature Center in Honey Creek, Iowa.

The exhibit covers a variety of topics, including environmental quality, public health and safety, farming practices and the care and management of animals.

The center is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays.

Roundup Parade entries sought

It's time to sign up for Ak-Sar-Ben's River City Roundup Heritage Parade.

The parade is scheduled for 10 a.m. Sept. 27 in downtown Omaha. The theme is "O! What a Community." Applications are available at www.rivercityroundup.org or by calling 554-9600, ext. 104.

Balloons this year will include My Little Pony, T-Rex and the Go Green! Globe. The parade features a large number of Nebraska and Iowa horse units.

Ak-Sar-Ben's River City Roundup also is accepting applications for three trail rides that cross Nebraska and Iowa. Fees are $145 for adults (age 13 and older) and $75 for children (age 12 and younger). Advance registration and fees must be postmarked by Aug. 31.

Mercy High celebrates plaza

Mercy High School at 1501 S. 48th St. will celebrate completion of its redesigned front entry and plaza addition Sunday, Aug. 10, with an ice cream social for its neighbors, alumnae and supporters.

The new area, named for donor and alumna Eileen Krebs Ryan, will be blessed during the event, which runs from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Mayor Mike Fahey and Auxiliary Bishop Anthony Milone are scheduled to participate.

Some features of Mercy's new "front door": light poles drawn from the Destination Midtown redevelopment plan, a front door with a two-story glass enclosure, terraces with seating, a new drop-off and pick-up site for cars, and planters and retaining walls.

Civil rights leader portrayal planned

Preston Love Jr. will portray the Rev. Adam Clayton Powell Jr. at a chautauqua performance Friday at 7 p.m. at the John Beasley Theater, 31st and Q Streets.

Powell was an advocate for civil rights. Audience members will be able to ask questions.

Ron Parker will impersonate Richard Pryor in a skit before the performance.

Birthday bash to aid dog rescue group

All leashed dogs are welcome at a birthday bash for the MidAmerica Boston Terrier Rescue Saturday, Aug. 9.

From noon to 2 p.m. at Seymour Smith Park, 72nd and Washington Streets, activities will include a raffle, food, dog eye screenings, nail trimming, microchipping, a bone hunt, a dog contest, family-friendly games and more.

Attendees can also bring unwanted pet supplies such as crates, leashes, towels and food to the event for the rescue group to use.

Cost is $5, but children under 12 are free. Proceeds will go to the rescue group's medical fund.

Catch a glimpse of night sky, meteors

Check out the night sky with members of the Omaha Astronomical Society at Hitchcock Nature Center's annual Night Sky event Saturday, Aug. 9.

All ages are welcome. Cost is $2.

Participants will be able to observe the Perseid meteor shower from a Loess Hills ridge top. Folks should bring blankets, lawn chairs and binoculars and meet at the nature center's entrance at 8:30 p.m.

Hitchcock Nature Center is at 27792 Ski Hill Loop in Honey Creek, Iowa.
