Nurse's death still a mystery

Jan 04, 2012 (Gulf Daily News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A GRIEVING husband whose wife committed suicide and left behind a six-month-old son, is still in the dark on the circumstances surrounding her death. Indian nurse Reena George was found hanging from a ceiling fan at her home in Salmaniya on Sunday.

The 30-year-old, who came to Bahrain six years ago, was dead by the time police arrived at the scene.

Her husband Destin Joseph was still in shock when speaking to the GDN yesterday, saying they were a happy couple.

He described in detail the agony his family went through when they found his wife's body hanging in their bedroom at 5pm.

"We came back home after having New Year's lunch at my manager's house," said the Sports Village Company technician.

"We were all sleeping when her mother, who came back home from church, called her name but didn't get an answer.

"Then she tried knocking on the door and calling her mobile phone but she didn't get a reply.

"I was in the other room with my son, Josh Paul, when I woke up to my mother-in-law's calls and when I saw the door of our room was locked, I panicked and pushed it open.

"I was in complete shock to see her hanging and immediately called police.

"I don't know why she took such an extreme step. We didn't have any problems." It is not clear if her body will be repatriated tomorrow or Friday, depending on the completion of legal formalities.

"I am still trying to forget what I saw," Mr Joseph said.

"Right now I am focusing on my six-month-old boy, who keeps crying because he is probably waiting for his mother to come back from work.

"He doesn't know what happened to her and that she will never come back." The couple, who got married in June 2009, celebrated New Years' Eve with Ms George's mother, sister and friends.

A close friend of Ms George, who wished to remain anonymous, claimed she might have suffered from postnatal depression.

But Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC) chief resident Dr P V Cheriyan denied the allegations, saying women who suffer from this illness are unable to work.

"It's a form of clinical depression which can affect women immediately after delivery," he said.

"I don't think she (Ms George) was suffering from it as she was working normally and going out and women suffering from such a form of depression are unable to work." Ms George, an SMC staff nurse, came to Bahrain from Ernakulum District of Kerala.

An Interior Ministry official ruled out foul play and confirmed it was a suicide. [email protected] ___ (c)2012 the Gulf Daily News (Manama, Bahrain) Visit the Gulf Daily News (Manama, Bahrain) at www.gulf-daily-news.com Distributed by MCT Information Services
