NMS Labs Dr. Christian Westring is appointed to NIST's Organization for Scientific Area Committees

WILLOW GROVE, Pa. --(Business Wire)--

On October 29, the U.S. Commerce Department's National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) announced the final appointments to the Organization for Scientific Area Committees (OSAC). These committees were created in order to coordinate the development of standards and guidelines for the forensic science community. They strive towards the goal of improving the quality and consistency of forensic science in the United States.

OSAC includes five Scientific Area Committees: Biology/DNA, Chemistry/Instrumental Analysis, Crime Scene/Death Investigation, Digital/Multimedia, and Physics/Pattern Interpretations. These five committees reviewed more than 1,400 applications in order to name 402 forensic experts to serve on 23 subject secific subcommittees in the five scientific areas.

Dr. Christian Westring, Director of Criminalistics and Quality Manager at NMS Labs, was appointed as one of the members to serve on the DNA Analysis subcommittee under the Biology/DNA Scientific Area Committee. Dr. Westring teaches formal course work in forensic genetics, molecular biology, serology and proteomics as an Adjunct Professor in Forensic Genetics at Arcadia University. As an expert and industry leader in DNA analytics, Dr. Westring has an active research and development program and is a contributing member to several other professional organizations in forensic science. His primary research interests include optimization and streamlining of laboratory systems and processes in serological and DNA based testing as well as the development of new and improved methods for the collection of touch-DNA based evidence.

"I am excited to be a part of OSAC," Dr. Westring said. "It is great to see such collaboration between experts from every part of forensic science, working together to bring continuity and credibility to the field."
