NewCore Wireless Selects Wireless Broadband Solution From Alcatel-Lucent to Support Wireless Voice and Multimedia Services

PARIS and ST. CLOUD, Minn., June 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced that Minnesota-based NewCore Wireless, a wholesale provider of wireless communications services, selected Alcatel-Lucent to deploy a 3G Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) network to offer its customers -- other mobile service providers that primarily serve people in rural areas -- sophisticated next-generation services such as advanced multimedia, high-speed mobile broadband, video sharing and mobile Internet access. NewCore Wireless will rely on Alcatel-Lucent's services expertise for their network integration and professional services.

"NewCore Wireless focuses on helping communications service providers in rural areas of the U.S. to overcome the technical and financial barriers to offering advanced wireless services to their customers, a market often overlooked by larger service providers," said Jim Jech, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for NewCore. "Alcatel-Lucent is helping us reach customers in rural markets and bring innovative wireless business opportunities to the U.S. wireless operators in these areas, starting with the northern Midwest." "We are enabling NewCore Wireless to offer a hosted 3G wireless switching platform to the ICOs (independent communications operators) and CLECs (competitive local exchange carriers) that serve the people in sparsely populated, rural areas empowering these smaller service providers to build new wireless networks they could not afford previously," said Steve Marino, Vice President of Strategic Wireless Accounts for Alcatel-Lucent's North America region. "Alcatel-Lucent has a long history of working with new service providers such as NewCore as well as those service providers who serve rural, unserved or underserved areas and we understand the technical challenges of offering the people in those areas the kinds of advanced communications services more typical in urban areas, but which can make a major difference in their lives." Alcatel-Lucent will supply NewCore with its industry-leading UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network (UTRAN) -- based on its multi-standard radio access solution -- including radio network controllers, node B base stations and a flexible wireless network management system. For cost-effective mobile transport, Alcatel-Lucent will deploy its IP Service Routers, which allow for the seamless converged transport of existing 3G traffic and will give NewCore the ability to smoothly transition to LTE as appropriate to address evolving market demands. Alcatel-Lucent also will provide a comprehensive suite of professional services in conjunction with this expansion contract, including installation, commissioning, program management, on-site training, network rollout and integration.

Alcatel-Lucent is a leading player in the wireless infrastructure market having deployed 350 commercial wireless networks worldwide, including 56 W-CDMA commercial networks in 37 countries. With more than 600,000 multi-standard cabinets shipped since 1999, Alcatel-Lucent's pioneering multi-standard technology base station is designed to support IP transformation and is part of our unique converged radio access network (RAN) strategy that enable operators to smoothly evolve towards future mobile broadband technologies. The company is a world leader in the design, deployment, management and integration of networks.
