New Spaceknow Africa Night Light Index available on Bloomberg

SAN FRANCISCO, July 28, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Spaceknow is launching new product on Bloomberg terminal. African Night Light Index (ticker: SPCK - name of the country) is available immediately to all Bloomberg customers.

In general, African countries suffer from a lack of publicly available macroeconomic data. Countries that provide some economic indicators, including the GDP release, usually do so with significant delays. The goal of Spaceknow Africa Night Light Index is to provide reliable economic indicators for African countries that are not influenced by any political or commercial interests.

Description of methodology:

Spaceknow Africa Night Light Index is based on the light intensity measured by satellites and then aggregated according to individual countries.

Although images are available on daily basis, some regions are negatively influenced by frequent cloud coverage.  Here, Spaceknow is taking into account only regions with negligible cloud cover. Images are composed into monthly aggregations and further processed.

Due to the high seasonality of the light intensity in Africa, Spaceknow compares the light intensity against the same period a year ago. Spaceknow works only with regions that have at least two Example of Spaceknow Africa Night Light Index and GD data for Egypt and Cameroon
