New roaming charges rules [Gulf Daily News (Bahrain)]

(Gulf Daily News (Bahrain) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) MOBILE phone companies must inform customers about data roaming charges before they travel under new rules proposed by the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA).

A consultation document was issued yesterday by the TRA, which features amendments to regulations imposed on mobile operators.

Consumers and members of consumer groups are being urged to add their comments to the document.

"The international data roaming service is increasingly used by consumers with little or no information about the charges to be paid for the service," said TRA consumer affairs and media director Ghada Ebrahim Al Qassab.

"The amendments to the regulation we are proposing aim to improve the transparency of the charges paid while roaming for data as well as voice and short messages services.

"The proposed amendments to the regulation will empower consumers to make informed choices when it comes to using data roaming.

"We strongly encourage consumers and consumer groups to review the proposed amendments to the regulation and provide their comments to be included in the final regulation." The TRA is proposing adding new provisions to regulation to inform consumers of the maximum tariff for sending and receiving data while roaming.

The consultation document can be found on the TRA's website at www.tra.org.bh. People have until December 28 to add their comments.
