New ESRC Chief Executive Announced(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) SWINDON, England, July 25 -- The Economic and Social Research Council issued the following news release: The Minister for Universities and Science, Greg Clark, has announced the appointment of Professor Jane Elliott as the next Chief Executive of the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). Professor Elliott is currently Director of the Centre for Longitudinal Studies (http://www.cls.ioe.ac.uk/) and of the CLOSER (Cohorts and Longitudinal Studies Enhancement Resources (http://www.closerprogramme.co.uk/)) programme at the Institute of Education, London. Dr Alan Gillespie, Chair of the ESRC Council, said: "I am pleased to announce that Professor Jane Elliott from the Institute of Education has been appointed as the next Chief Executive of the ESRC, replacing Professor Paul Boyle. Jane is a distinguished social scientist who will prove an outstanding appointment to this position, and the ESRC looks forward to working with her." Jane is a sociologist with strong links to the ESRC. She is Director of two major ESRC resource centres and has previously served as a Member of the Advisory Committee for the Economic and Social Data Service, as well as a Member of the ESRC Peer Review College. Her main research interests include gender and employment, healthy ageing and longitudinal research methodology, combining qualitative and quantitative research and narrative. Professor Elliott said: "I am delighted to have this opportunity to lead the ESRC at this challenging and exciting time. I look forward to working collaboratively both within the ESRC and with the ESRC's many partner organisations to ensure that we continue to foster and support the highest quality social science research." Professor Elliott will take up her new role at the ESRC on 1 October 2014 on a four-year appointment. She succeeds Professor Paul Boyle who leaves the research council after four years to take up the post of Vice-Chancellor at the University of Leicester. ESRC Chair Dr Alan Gillespie said: "On behalf of the ESRC, I would like to thank Professor Paul Boyle for his invaluable leadership and contribution to the ESRC. Paul brought a wealth of academic experience and expertise, and through his skills, vision and diplomacy he has provided strong and effective leadership, as well as the energy and drive to steer the ESRC through a challenging economic period."
