New in Business

Aug 29, 2010 (The Herald-Palladium - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Sport Fit Athletics trains kids, adults ST. JOSEPH -- After a long career teaching gymnasts and helping people keep fit, Pam Whittier has opened Sport Fit Athletics, providing fitness programs for children and adults.

Sport Fit is at the corner of Cleveland and Hawthorne avenues in St. Joseph Township. The building previously housed Cheer Unlimited.

Sport Fit offers a wide variety of fitness and other classes, ranging from pre-kindergarten (16 months to 5 years) to senior citizens. There are Zumba and kettlebells aerobics, sports performance training, recreational and competitive gymnastics, cheer and tumbling classes and classes for skateboarders and snowboarders. Programs for women only are conducted in The Fitness Loft.

Sport Fit also offers family entertainment, including birthday parties, overnights, open gym, lunch bunch play hour, Camp Friday, Mom's Day Out, school field trips, gym rentals and teen dances. Personal training, corporate group fitness classes and team training also are available.

Whittier, 49, said she started teaching gymnastics at 15 and aerobics at 18. When she came to the Twin Cities about 20 years ago, she worked full time for the YWCA of Berrien County and part time for Nancy Finch at Southwest Michigan Gymnasts. She bought Finch's business in 1995, renaming it Sunset Coast Gymnastics Inc.

Whittier closed that business in 2006 and became recreation/fitness director for the YWCA. After the YWCA sold its building in St. Joseph last year, she operated "Boot Camp Fitness" classes at Berrien County beaches last summer.

Whittier opened Sport Fit Athletics in April. She conducts most of the fitness classes, along with personal training.

The Cornerstone Chamber of Commerce will host a ribbon cutting at 11:30 a.m. Monday, along with officials from St. Joseph Township. A grand opening celebration will continue through Friday.

Overdun does commercial videos ST. JOSEPH -- When Kyle Bainter moved to St. Joseph about a year ago from Chicago, he brought his business with him.

Bainter is the owner of Overdun Productions, which does video and motion graphic production for corporate clients. He said he started the business in 2002 in his hometown of Elkhart, Ind.

He does such things as commercials for television and the Internet, training and instructional videos, interviews and factory tour videos. Bainter said he has done work for KitchenAid, Sears, Bankers Insurance Group, Allstate insurance and the Goshen (Ind.) Center for Cancer Care.

The website is www.overdun.com, and the phone number is (269) 588-0050.

Bainter said he uses a digital cinema camera with four times the resolution of conventional high definition cameras. Such cameras, also used for making motion pictures for theaters, allow more tweaking of images when editing.

"I love to be the cinema photographer and sometimes editor," he said, but as a staff of one, he tries to hire local people when possible as editors and producers.

Bainter and his wife, Lindsey, lived in downtown Chicago for two years before moving to St. Joseph, her hometown, about a year ago. Since he does business stretching around Lake Michigan from Chicago to Grand Rapids, Bainter said, St. Joseph is a good central location for Overdun. His office is in downtown St. Joseph.
