Nepal protest continues despite curfew

(UPI Top Stories Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)The Nepal capital of Kathmandu was put under a new 11-hour curfew Friday after a massive protest against the king.

An estimated 100,000 people turned out Thursday to demonstrate against the monarchy, CNN reported. The protests continued Friday but on a smaller scale and with new restrictions.

Thursday's rally was the culmination of more than two weeks of protests against King Gyanendra's rule, which his opponents say is unconstitutional. They are demanding he step down.

A government-imposed curfew was lifted early Friday but was to resume at 9 a.m. and extend until 8 p.m.

That left residents little time to stock up on supplies and staples like milk and foodstuffs were reported scarce.
