Nepal police open fire on protesters

(UPI Top Stories Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)On the sixth day of general strikes in Nepal, police for the first time have fired live rounds at demonstrators, wounding at least five persons.

The action was taken Tuesday after hundreds of protesters attacked the house of a senior police officer in Kathmandu, the capital, smashing windows and setting a fire on the property.

The mob was reacting to a claim made Sunday by Interior Minister Kamal Thapa that the demonstrators had been infiltrated by Maoists, the Telegraph Online reported Wednesday.

The police opening fire was the worst violence since the protests started last week. A strict curfew has been in place for four days, but the demonstrations have continued.

The seven-party opposition alliance has staged a strike in the capital demanding King Gyanendra re-establish parliament and allow free elections.
