NATO base attacked in western Afghanistan

(UPI Top Stories Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)An Afghan suicide bomber hit an Italian-led reconstruction team, killing two and injuring nine, in the western city of Herat, reports Pajhwok Afghan News.

A white Corolla struck a military vehicle exiting the provincial reconstruction team base and exploded, killing an Afghan guard and the bomber Saturday morning, the agency said.

The director of the Herat Civil Hospital, Dr. Sayed Naeem Alami, said nine injured had been hospitalized at the facility.

The base is used by Italian-led NATO forces working on reconstruction projects for the country.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, the agency said. The militia's purported spokesman, Qari Yousaf Ahmadi, said the attacker's name was Abdul Rahim and he was a resident of Herat province.

On Friday, three U.S. contractors were injured in a similar attack at the Lashkargah provincial reconstruction team base in the southern Helmand province.
