N. Korea may have launched land-to-air missiles: source+

(Japan Economic Newswire Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)BEIJING, March 8_(Kyodo) _ North Korea may have fired two ground-to-air missiles near the country's Chinese border on Wednesday, an Asian security source said.

The source said that the missiles were believed to have been launched in the direction toward China, but the time of their launch and the area where they landed remained unknown.

The firing of the missiles may be the result of a mistake during a military drill, the source said.

North Korea has refrained from test-firing long-range ballistic missiles but has test-fired short-range ground-to-air and ground-to-ship missiles from 2003. In May 2005, it fired a short-range missile into the Sea of Japan.

The commander of U.S. forces in South Korea said in a written testimony for the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee on Tuesday that North Korea is preparing to field a new intermediate ballistic missile capable of reaching Okinawa, Guam and probably Alaska.
