Mount Baker's Cardillo earns GOP scholarship, headed to West Point

Jun 20, 2010 (The Bellingham Herald - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The Republican Women of Whatcom County last week presented a $500 scholarship to Mount Baker High School graduate Kyle Cardillo, who was appointed to the United States Military Academy at West Point by U.S. Rep. Rick Larson.

This is the first year the Republican Women offered this scholarship for school seniors with families in the Republican Party. Sharon Helm, who is finishing up four years as the organization's president, said it will more than likely become an annual scholarship.

The group admired Kyle's well-written essay on newly elected County Councilwoman Kathy Kershner. The scholarship committee was also impressed with Kyle's community service with the Civil Air Patrol, Whatcom County Search and Rescue and the Republican Party.

Kyle is the son of Steve Cardillo and Nicolle and Dennis Armstrong, all of Bellingham.

Nicolle said Kyle's involvement with the Civil Air Patrol was a big factor in his pursuit and acceptance to West Point. She said he has always known that he would serve in the military, but the patrol really helped him focus and set his sights higher. He also has attended a summer flight school, which started him on the path to his student pilot license.

Kyle was also awarded the Washington State Honors Award, The Air Force Academic Excellence in Mathematics and Science Award, and received a scholarship from the Rome Grange.

He leaves June 27 for West Point.
