metacog Releases Automated Real-time Rubric-based Scoring API

PHILADELPHIA, July 1, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- metacog (http://www.metacog.com) will introduce the first advanced scoring analytics API that can evaluate student performance within simulations, games, and other open-ended assessment items and digital learning objects – in real time.

The metacog™ API toolkit "shows the work" and thought processes that learners exhibit during interactions with digital performance-based lessons and assessments, enabling a broader, richer, and more authentic view of what a learner knows. It goes beyond the limited completion and time-on-task data provided by existing web and learning analytics products and can measure the degree of mastery which students demonstrate.

"Our goal with metacog's scoring service API is to enable a new generation of instruction and assessment products where students create responses instead of merely picking them. Constructed-response is already part of the repertoire of strong educators, but it's too labor-intensive to use frequently enough to inform learning. metacog/b> changes that – it can observe a student's performance in detail and score it quickly enough to drive formative instruction and adaptive learning," said Owen Lawlor, Chief Digital Officer at metacog.

"The metacog toolkit and deep learning analytics platform is a game changer – by opening a window into how learners arrive at an answer through analysis of a huge anonymized dataset of interactions, it gives anyone who makes products for the learning industry an immensely powerful tool for reducing the cost and time it takes to deliver authentic assessment of real-world, cognitively challenging, performance-based tasks." These more authentic activities close the gap between academic instruction and workplace readiness by providing educators the ability to measure their learners' preparedness to address real-world problems. Traditional assessments like multiple choice and their offshoots primarily measure what someone knows. With metacog, educators and employers can measure and visualize what someone can actually do, and connect those micro-credentials directly with twenty-first-century workplace needs.

The metacog toolkit is an Internet-scale data platform implemented in the Cloud and accessed via standard REST APIs; it ingests real-time data from tens of millions of sessions generated by instrumented interactives, including online simulations, games, virtual labs, e-books, and assessments. Publishers, assessment writers, curriculum developers, researchers, school districts, and distance learning programs can easily "metacog" their digital interactives to ingest learner-generated data, analyze or score it, and make it actionable through a variety of visualization and reporting tools.

While a pre-release version of the toolkit has been available to a select group of developers, the formal launch took place on June 29, 2015 at the metacog booth, #149, at ISTE 2015 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia.

metacog was spun off from Victory Productions (http://www.victoryprd.com), which has supplied high-stakes assessment, curriculum development, technology, professional learning, and translation services to the education market since 1994. Both companies are headquartered in Worcester, Massachusetts and are Women/Minority-Owned Business Enterprises.
