Merger creates Makers Haven; Upper Crust features desserts, coffee: News nuggets and coffee-shop chatter from Paducah and the area.

(Paducah Sun, The (KY) (KRT) Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Oct. 21--Patty Anselm and Rene' Doublin have merged their businesses into The Makers Haven, a divinely named gift shop at Kevil on a hill overlooking U.S. 60 across from Christian radio station WGCF.

The two recently held a grand opening for the shop, named after Anselm's Memory Makers framing business and Doublin's longtime home-decorating venture. They attend church at St. Mary's Catholic Church in La Center, and Anselm lives above the store.

"We joined the name, of course, with our ultimate maker being God," Doublin said.

The shop sells sacred and secular gifts, home decor, seasonal items, antiques, and candles made by Wickliffe-based Hillhouse Naturals, which ships worldwide. Doublin and Anselm plan to customize special-occasion labels, including family photos, for the candles.

Makers Haven is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Phone: 462-3131.

Lana Watkins plans to open coffee-and-dessert shop The Upper Crust on Oct. 29 at 2602 Jackson St.

"I've made desserts my whole life," she said. "All my recipes were my grandmother's recipes."

Watkins and her husband, Joe Watkins, decided to open the shop after she made desserts for contractors who helped her with her mural-painting business.

Managed by Lisa Smith, The Upper Crust will feature pies, cakes, cobblers, cookies and various types of coffee. People can drop off their own dishes and have them filled with hot desserts, Watkins said.

The shop will open at 6:30 a.m. Monday through Saturday, but closing time hasn't been determined. Phone: 441-PIES.

Shirley Lanier of Paducah has opened lanier.virtual.assistant using the Web, e-mail, phone and fax to provide professional administrative, management and support services from her home.

She is certified by the International Virtual Assistants Association for administrative, marketing and notary/paralegal work.

Phone: 441-7483. E-mail: lanier.virtual.assistant@gmail.com.
