MCT creates open source centers

(BNamericas.com Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Venezuela's science and technology ministry MCT has started up an open source academy (ASL) in the capital district and in the states of Tchira and Carabobo to promote the production of open source solutions, the government said in a statement.

Instructions for how the ASLs should operate fall under the country's science, technology and information law that includes guidelines regarding how the country should migrate to open source.

MCT along with science and technology development foundation Fundacites will be in charge of the ASLs in each region.

By opening these academies, MTC hopes to subscribe strategic alliances in Venezuela and with foreign partners.

ASL will be in charge of training staff to boost the quality of operating systems for IT and communications infrastructure in the country and to create a database to provide regular information about the advances made within the academy.

MCT is also considering opening an ASL in the facilities of the Venezuelan scientific investigation institute (Ivic) with the purpose of establishing a control and development center for IT initiatives in the capital district.
