McCartney will hit high notes
Jul 11, 2010 (The Fayetteville Observer - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
At age 68, Paul McCartney is still rocking.
On July 28, the former Beatle will play Charlotte for the first time in 17 years when he brings his "Up and Coming Tour" to the Time Warner Cable Arena.
By now, fans know what to expect from a McCartney concert: A well-rounded selection of hits from the singer's solo career and his time with the Beatles and Wings.
"Hey Jude" is almost a given. So are "Let it Be" and "Band on the Run."
But what about the more obscure material? Here's a wish list of five overlooked songs this long-time fan would love to hear McCartney revisit.
"Too Many People": The opening number on McCartney's 1971 "Ram" album, this song starts as a wistful ballad and builds to a rocking climax. At the time of the album's release, some saw it as a subtle dig at former partner John Lennon. In any case, it's a great song.
"Beware My Love": Featured on the 1976 album "Wings at the Speed of Sound" and now all but forgotten, this song features one of McCartney's best post-Beatles vocals.
"Think for Yourself": McCartney has been covering the late George Harrison's "Something" in his shows. That's great, but why not sing this lesser-known Harrison thumper from the "Rubber Soul" album?
"And Your Bird Can Sing": One of the most unjustly overlooked Beatles' numbers, this song soars on chiming vocals and guitars. It would be interesting to hear what an older and wiser McCartney would bring to this song, written mostly by Lennon.
"Run Devil Run": This '50s-styled rocker was one of the highlights of McCartney's 1999 album of the same name, a blistering homage to the music that first inspired the artist.
