Maternal Mortality Rate dips by 124 points in last 10 years: Govt [DNA : Daily News & Analysis (India)]

(DNA : Daily News & Analysis (India) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) "With rigorous efforts being put in by the state and the Central governments, the worrisome mother mortality rate (MMR) in state has come down in the past decade from 332 and currently stands at 208 as per government records. In order to further reduce and strengthen the safe birth of infants, MSD for Mothers was launched here in Jaipur.

MSD for Mothers (also known as Merck for Mothers), is a 10-year global initiative to address one of world's oldest and most preventable health tragedies - death of a woman from complications experienced during pregnancy and while delivering baby. It is being implemented by Hindustan Latex Family Planning Promotion Trust (HLFPPT).

The MSD for Mothers would be functioning in 19 districts of the state on a three-year project. During the course, 19 urban and 38 rural Merrygold Hospitals would be set up along with training and deployment of more than 1,000 village-based Merrytarang community health members.

The initiative is focused to provide low-cost effective treatment to pregnant ladies. It will also ensure that women in far-flung areas of the state do not depend upon quacks or other unsafe means while delivering a child.

During the event, Navin Jain, Mission Director, NHM, Rajasthan, Neeraj K Pawan, additional director, NHM, KG Ananthkrishnan, MD, MSD in India, Sharad Agarwal, CEO, HLFPPT, and Geralyn S Ritter, senior vice-president, Global Service Policy and Corporate Responsibility at MSD were also present.

Speaking on the occasion, Navin Jain said, "It is challenging to bring down the MMR and the IMR but at the same time the state government is doing its bit. I would hope that MSD for Mothers does well and reaches all corners of the state and helps pregnant woman deliver their child healthy and safe."
