Marshwood student's speech stresses that without the bad, the good wouldn't be so good [Foster's Daily Democrat, Dover, N.H.]

(Foster's Daily Democrat (Dover, NH) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) June 11--SOUTH BERWICK, Maine -- Family, friends, faculty, staff and graduates gathered together on Friday night to celebrate the graduation of Marshwood High School's class of 2011.

"Let me thank the moms, dads, grandparents, community, faculty and staff who have pushed and supported all the members of the class of 2011," said Marshwood High School Principal Paul Mehlhorn.

The 172 graduates, with their faculty and staff, sat on the home field of the Hawks and listened as their principal and peers reflected on their time not only in high school, but together.

"The key success for us was balance," said Valedictorian Anthony Strada. "Everything in life needs balance... without the bad, the good wouldn't be so good." Strada spoke of all that he and his classmates had experienced in their time at Marshwood, but also in the last 12 years of their education. He told of how mishaps have taught him and his classmates how to appreciate the good in their lives while it was occurring.

"Without flunking that first exam, you wouldn't truly know how good it feels to get that A," said Strada.

Strada's classmate and salutatorian of the class of 2011, Ryan Fallon, spoke of not only all that he and his classmates have experienced together, but also what graduation really means.

"It's a milestone we've anticipacted since we could comprehend it and something we will remember for a lifetime," said Fallon. "It's an end to the carefree days and the start of being an adult in the real world." While the class of 2011 gave their greatest gift to the school in their participation and desire for change, said Mehlhorn, the students also took part in some hefty fundraising in order to give a more tangible gift to their alma mater. Class president David Blass announced that this year's senior gift would be a digital banner to be placed on Route 236 so oncoming traffic would know about events and happenings at Marshwood.

"I want to thank the class of 2011 for their willingness to be pushed and not needing to be shoved," said Mehlhorn. "They have made a significant impact on this school."
