MAN LOSES THREE LIMBS IN SHREDDER ACCIDENT

(New Zealand Press Association Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)Wellington, Feb 23 NZPA - A New Plymouth refuse worker is in a critical condition at Taranaki Base Hospital after he lost both legs and an arm in an industrial tree shredder on Monday.

The 48-year-old man was caught in the shredder at the New Plymouth refuse transfer station for about an hour and a half before being freed by rescue workers, Sergeant Bruce Irvine said.

He was conscious throughout the ordeal as a trauma doctor amputated one of his legs at the scene. The blades of the shredder amputated the other limbs.

The man's family were taken to the scene to comfort him before he was taken to hospital.

His name will not be released as the family had asked for privacy, Mr Irvine said.

It is unclear how the accident happened. It is being investigated by the Labour Department.
