LTE Development in Europe

LONDON, May 13, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Scope

This study provides an update on the state of long-term evolution (LTE) deployment across 11 European countries. It offers a snapshot of the mobile communications market per country. It also analyses the key LTE developments and plans of mobile network operators in the areas of LTE-Advanced, Voice-over-LTE (VoLTE), and LTE Broadcast.

Key Findings

Long-term evolution (LTE) is the key technology demonstrating value and differentiation for mobile network operators (MNOs). However, service penetration in Europe is still modest, ranging from xx% in Russia to approximately xx% in the United Kingdom and xx% in Sweden (2014).
- As of end 2014, there were xx live and xx planned LTE networks in the xx European countries covered in this study.
•The xx MHz spectrum band dominates the landscape. It is used in xx% of the commercially deployed LTE networks, followed by the xx GHz (xx%) and xxMHz (xx%) bands. With spectrum being scarce, there is a growing interest in the exploration of lower LTE frequency in the xxMHz band. France and Germany will hold their respective spectrum auctions in 2015, while Sweden and the United Kingdom will hold theirs over the next xx years.

- The launch of the LTE-Advanced carrier aggregation (LTE-A CA) service was a major trend in 2014. By the end of the year, there were xx live LTE-A networks. Taking note of the additional deployments in progress, trials, and studies, xx% of the LTE operators are currently investing in LTE-A technology.
- In terms of LTE offerings, Voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) is undergoing trials and first live demonstrations. However, the service should gain momentum in 2015 with almost a quarter of LTE operators planning service launches in this year.
- LTE Broadcast has so far been studied/trialled only by a small number of LTE operators. The first live demonstrations took place during some major sports events in 2014 and more are expected to follow over the coming years.
