Local AmVets collect DVDs for troops

May 04, 2010 (The Deming Headlight - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Entertainment is hard to come by in a war zone, which is perhaps a place in which a good time is needed the most.

To help deployed military overseas combat boredom, the local AMVETS Post No. 30 has kicked off a "Task Force: DVD" campaign. Collected DVDs and CDs will be sent overseas to service members.

"They need entertainment over there," Jack Apfelbacher, post commander and state first vice commander, explained.

When not on patrol or helping rebuild infrastructure, deployed soldiers, airmen, sailors and Marines have precious little time to kick back, throw their feet up and enjoy time for relaxation.

"A lot of the bases are in very remote areas in hostile territory, so they can't always go outside," Leeanna Rossi, AMVET member, said.

There are boxes for lightly-used DVDs, CDs and checks at the following locations: Savoy Travel Center, Peppers Supermarket, Western New Mexico University's Deming branch, Fast Bucks, Loyal Order of Moose Lodge, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1477 and the American Legion Post.

New and used media will be accepted until May 31. The AMVETS ask that individuals not donate pornographic materials.

To help entice donations, the AMVETS are offering a $50 gift certificate to Peppers for the local resident who makes the most donations. Rossi is also sponsoring a $30 Peppers gift certificate for the WNMU student who makes the most donations. To ensure donations are tracked properly, individuals should affix a piece of tape to the media's container with their name and phone number.

Cash donations are also extremely handy, as it costs about $5 to ship approximately 35 CDs and DVDs.

The group is also asking for local businesses to step forward and volunteer space for a collection box, or to start a DVD drive on their own.

For more information, to make a donation or to get involved, contact Rossi at (575) 494-0740. Donations and checks/cash may also be sent directly to the AMVETS Post, which is housed under the roof of the American Legion, at 619 W. Spruce St.
