At least 29 dead in Pakistan stampede

(UPI Top Stories Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)At least 29 women and children have been killed and more than 70 others injured in a stampede following a religious ceremony in southern Pakistan.

The incident started Sunday when a girl fell down during women-only prayers to mark the birthday of the Prophet Mohammed at an Islamic Centre in Karachi, the BBC reported.

Approximately 10,000 women were at the centre when the girl fell from the building's staircase. Some women moved quickly to try to save her and the crowd began to push.

As people tried to exit the building, several women and children fell to the ground and were crushed. Others died of suffocation.

The city's two main hospitals have declared an emergency and appeals are being made for blood needed to treat the injured.
