TOKYO - Japan called on South Korea on Wednesday to "understand" its planned maritime survey near a group of disputed isles in the Sea of Japan.

"There is no problem in terms of international law that we conduct a scientific maritime survey within our country's exclusive economic zone," Chief Cabinet Secretary Shinzo Abe said at a press conference.

---------- Seoul urges Tokyo to immediately drop maritime survey plan

SEOUL - South Korean Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister Ban Ki Moon said Wednesday that South Korea demands Japan immediately retract a plan to conduct a maritime survey near a group of disputed isles in the Sea of Japan and settle the issue diplomatically.



"If Japan goes ahead with the survey, South Korea will deal with sternly in accordance with international law and domestic law," Ban said after a high-security meeting convened by President Roh Moo Hyun.

---------- Abe urges China to tell Japan promptly if more errors found


TOKYO - Chief Cabinet Secretary Shinzo Abe said Wednesday that China should tell Japan promptly if it makes an error similar to the recent one concerning disputed waters.

"In cases where this kind of error is made, it is important to promptly notify the country concerned and try to dispel misunderstanding," Abe said at a press conference, referring to the bilateral spat over China's recent maritime traffic ban.

---------- Australia to deploy troops to Solomon Islands

SYDNEY - Australia will send troops to the Solomon Islands to restore order after a night of violence in the capital Honiara, Prime Minister John Howard said Wednesday.

Howard told reporters soldiers would be immediately deployed from a Townsville base in Queensland.

---------- Chinese President Hu arrives in U.S.

SEATTLE - Chinese President Hu Jintao arrived in Seattle on Tuesday to begin his first visit to the United States since he attended special summit talks on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly last September.

Hu said in a statement upon arrival here that he is delighted to visit the United States at the invitation of U.S. President George W. Bush, whom he will meet at the White House on Thursday, according to a Xinhua News Agency dispatch.

---------- Japanese soldier from World War II returns home from Ukraine

NARITA, Japan - A former Imperial Japanese Army soldier who was recently confirmed to be alive in Ukraine after going missing in Russia's Far East after World War II returned to Japan on Wednesday for the first time in 63 years.

Ishinosuke Uwano, 83, and his son, Anatoly, 37, arrived at Narita International Airport aboard an Aeroflot plane and will stay in Japan through April 28. Uwano will meet with his relatives in the town of Hirono, Iwate Prefecture, on Thursday, his first reunion since he was drafted in 1943.
