Journal Broadcast adds interactive media executive

Feb 15, 2012 (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Journal Broadcast Group said Tuesday it has hired Michael J. Gay to lead the design and implementation of digital initiatives across all of Journal's television and radio broadcast properties.

Gay was named vice president of interactive media for Journal Broadcast Group, which is a division of Milwaukee-based Journal Communications Inc.

Gay joins Journal from Hearst Television, where he was corporate executive producer for digital media. He will report directly to Steven J. Smith, chairman and chief executive of Journal Communications.

"Our broadcast digital business is growing and is an important priority for us," Smith said. "Michael's experience at Hearst Television, WBBM-TV, and other stations will help us sharpen our focus on this strategic objective." Gay spent five years at Hearst Television as corporate executive producer of digital media. Before Hearst, he worked as Web manager for WBBM-TV in Chicago. He also spent time in broadcast Internet roles at KRON-TV in San Francisco and WLNS-TV and WILX-TV in Lansing.

He holds an Internet marketing master's degree from Full Sail University, and a telecommunications bachelor's degree from Michigan State University.

"I am excited to join the passionate local teams in the Journal Broadcast Group and leverage multiple interactive platforms to make our communities a better place to live," Gay said. "We will develop our platforms to engage with our consumers, empower our advertisers and drive digital innovation within the communities we call home." Journal Communications, which publishes the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and JSOnline.com., is a diversified media company with operations in radio and TV broadcasting, publishing and interactive media. It owns and operates 33 radio stations and 13 television stations in 12 states, and runs an additional television station under a local marketing agreement.

In addition to publishing the Journal Sentinel, the company publishes several community newspapers and shoppers in Wisconsin.
