ALBANS, Australia, April 28 (UPI) -- A man who found more than $420,000 in a St. Albans, Australia, parking lot will have to wait three months to find out if he can keep it. The cash, which was in a bag, has been sent for forensic testing, the Melbourne Herald-Sun reported. A police officer who has worked at Craigieburn station for 12 years said it was the largest amount of money he had seen handed in. Police are calling for witnesses who may have seen a bag dumped, in the hope of locating its owner. This is not the first time large amounts of cash have been handed to police. In February, a Malvern secondhand store turned in a large amount of money found in some clothes. Jitendra Chirag, 24, found $10,000 stashed in an envelope in Malvern in September last year. He kept it safe until he was able to get to a police station later in the day, where it was claimed by the owner -- a man in his 60s who lost it when he fell on his way home from the bank. Swedish royals accidentally pump and runGRAMYRA, Norway, April 28 (UPI) -- The identity of the car owner who cheated a Norwegian gas station out of a tank of gas came as a surprise -- it was the king of Sweden. The owner of the Hydro Texaco station accepted an apology and full payment from the palace in Stockholm. The unintentional theft occurred as King Carl Gustaf and Queen Sofia, accompanied by two friends and two bodyguards, returned from an Easter visit to their cottage in Storlien, a Swedish ski resort almost on the Norwegian border. They stopped to buy gas at the station in the Trondelag region. The newspaper Tronder-Avisa reported that one of the royal friends was driving. He filled the tank, went inside and paid for a candy bar -- but forgot to pay for the gas. The owner of the little station in Trondelag was a nice fellow, said Nina Eld, a spokeswoman for the Swedish royal family. He accepted our apology and we settled up. Baby, the No. 1 U.S. single for three weeks in 1974, won the dubious distinction of worst song ever with less than 5 percent of the vote -- and only about 50 votes more than the second worst song, The Captain and Tennille's Muskrat Love, CNN reported Thursday. The No. 3 worst song ever was Debby Boone's You Light Up My Life, which spent 10 weeks as No. 1 in 1977, followed by Charlene's 1982 I've Never Been to Me and -- rounding out the Top 5 -- Terry Jacks' 1974 Seasons in the Sun. 'Same old' for bank-robbing limo driverSAN FRANCISCO, April 28 (UPI) -- A San Francisco limo driver recently released from state prison for bank robbery has been charged with using his employer's car to pull another heist. Police said a man entered a bank Tuesday afternoon, jumped the counter and demanded money before running out. Witnesses saw a brand new limousine squeal away, and wrote down its license number. Within 10 minutes, the car was stopped, and Roy Westry, 45, was arrested on suspicion of robbery and conspiracy, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. Westry has worked for the limousine service since being released from state prison in January. He had served about five years for bank robbery, and was on federal probation. John Butler, manager of the limo service said Westry had worked for the company in 2001, but left, saying he had found another job. Butler was the one who hired him back. We didn't know he had done any prison time, Butler said. |
