Job Corps places first in competition

Oct 16, 2010 (The Floyd County Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- OCEAN CITY, Md. -- A group of students from the Carl D. Perkins Job Corps in Prestonsburg took first-place for the second year in a row at the 20th annual multi-regional Academic and Career Olympics championship held in Ocean City, Md. on Oct. 6.

Nina Stone, Matthew Jacobson, Quisto Ortiz, Jacob Gardner, David Guest and Dustin Meadows, under the direction of their coaches Brandon Conley, Susie Grossl and Shirley Bryant defeated teams from Job Corps Centers in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Virginia and the District of Columbia.

"We're proud of them. It shows what type of training we do here at the Perkins Job Corps Center," said Director Thomas Rainey. "They did an excellent job. It's something that the staff takes great pride in. They do an outstanding job. The students worked very hard and studied long hours in preparation for the competition. Each member of the team won laptop computers and a cash award." Six teams from Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Massachusetts and the District of Columbia competed for top academic honors, cash prizes and trophies. Individual winners won laptops donated by Adams and Associates Inc., a Job Corps contractor that operates centers in Pennsylvania and Maryland.

Contest questions were based on the General Educational Development and high school competency materials that Job Corps instructors use to train students to qualify for GED certificates and high school diplomas. The questions covered the subject areas of language arts, social studies, science, spelling and mathematics.
